FAQ: Installation

1. Is LaneHawk hard to install?
No most stores can be installed in one night. An 8-inch by 12-inch hole is cut in the checkout lane about BOB height from the floor, and positioned roughly where the credit card/ETF reader is located. The LaneHawk Intelligent Lighting and Camera Unit (iLCU) is mounted in this hole, and connected by Ethernet cable to a LaneHawk BOS (back office server) in the store's server room. Each lane also requires available 120v unswitched power to plug in the iLCU. The BOS is connected to the store's POS controller by patch cable through the store's switch or router.

2. Do you have to install LaneHawk in all the lanes?
Most retailers prefer to install LaneHawk in all lanes to make cashier training and operation more consistent. Some retailers prefer not to install LaneHawk in dedicated Express Lanes (which tend not to have as much BOB traffic) or idle lanes, but that is up to the retailer to decide.

3. Does LaneHawk work with Self-Checkout lanes?
Yes, LaneHawk can work with Self-Checkout lanes, both larger belted units as well as the smaller express units.

4. How do you integrate with the POS?
LaneHawk connects to the POS in many ways like another barcode scanner. When LaneHawk makes a BOB item recognition, it sends an XML message containing the item's UPC, description, and quantity to the POS controller to present to the video display. The POS User Interface does need to be customized slightly to present the LaneHawk BOB Item List when the "Total" key is pressed, and to allow the cashier to process the BOB item(s) from the POS. Most of the customization is limited to the placement of the BOB Item List on the video display, and assignment of keys to execute the five actions (Accept, Quantity Up, Quantity Down, Scroll Up, Scroll Down, and Clear) to process the BOB items. Once the BOB Item List has been processed, accepted or scanned items are linked to the POS item file for pricing and then added to the transaction.

5. How long does it take to do the integration?
Normally, it will take between 6-12 weeks to design, develop, and test the integrated LaneHawk code, depending on your test requirements and POS code update schedules.

6. Who performs the integration?
Our preferred integrator, and our strategic business partner, is IBM. We utilize their services for most IBM 4690/ACE systems. For other systems, we will work with the retailer to determine the best integration partner.

7. Can LaneHawk integrate with any POS system?
Yes.

8. We don't have a video monitor (VGA display). Will LaneHawk still work?
LaneHawk will still work, but it is easiest for cashiers to process the LaneHawk BOB item list if there is a VGA (text-based or graphical) display for the BOB item list to be presented. We can configure the BOB item list to be a pop-up table, or actually temporarily overwrite a portion of the screen that you designate.
