About Us
Evolution Robotics Retail is based in Pasadena, California and develops intelligent products and solutions for the retail industry based on its ViPR® (visual pattern recognition) technology.
The company's flagship product is LaneHawk® BOB, a retail loss prevention solution that helps turn bottom-of-basket (BOB) losses and in-cart losses into profits in real time. Evolution Robotics Retail's ViPR technology exists in over 2 million machines worldwide, and LaneHawk has been implemented in just over 10,000 lanes of leading national and regional grocery store chains in the United States.

Established in 2006, Evolution Robotics Retail is a leader in vision based technology and analytical tools geared towards loss prevention in the retail sector.
Alec Hudnut Alec Hudnut is Chief Executive Officer of Evolution Robotics Retail, a world leader in item level recognition through software. Prior to founding Evolution Robotics Retail, Alec was CEO of Evolution Robotics. Both companies specialize in developing advanced visual pattern recognition software. Before joining Evolution Robotics, Alec was a Managing Director at Idealab, an innovative, high tech incubator, where he launched and supported a number of software companies. Alec has over 20 years of high technology, consulting and corporate finance experience from previous roles as CEO of educational software company Quisic, as a consultant at McKinsey & Co., and as an investment banker at Goldman Sachs & Co. Alec holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BA from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he was a Morehead Scholar. Alec enjoys pick-up basketball games and playing competitive soccer. Mark Belfiglio Mark Belfiglio is Vice President of Sales and Marketing. Mark has over 20 years of sales, marketing and management experience in the retail technology industry. Mark was most recently Vice President of Sales, Retail for Wincor Nixdorf USA. Prior to this, Mark was Vice President of the eastern region for TIBCO Software, where he was named Vice President of the year in 2003. In addition, Mark was Division Vice President and General Manager for Symbol Technologies. eastern division, managing an organization with greater than $400M in revenue and more than 130 professionals that worked with many of the industry.s best known tier one retailers. Mark also spent 10 years at NCR where he assumed positions of increasing responsibility including Executive Major Account Manager and Director of Enterprise Sales Consulting. Mark holds a B.S. degree in Business Management from The Pennsylvania State University. Mark enjoys spending time with his family, helping coach his son's sports teams, and offshore fishing. Jim Ostrowski Dr. Jim Ostrowski is Vice President of Product Development. Jim's field of expertise includes mobile robotics, nonlinear dynamics, and vision-based control. Jim is from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a tenured Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and a member of the General Robotics, Sensing, Automation and Perception (GRASP) Laboratory. He holds a Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology and he is a former Associate Editor for the journal IEEE Transactions on Robotics and Automation. Jim organizes a weekly lunch outing to explore restaurants in the Pasadena area. He likes playing pretty much any team sport (though soccer most of all) and hanging out with his family. Luis Goncalves Dr. Luis Goncalves is Vice President of Research and Development and develops technology for object recognition and machine-human interaction. His research interests are in computer vision and machine learning, especially as applied to visual pattern recognition. He received a B.A.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada in 1991. In 1992, he received an M.S. in Electrical Engineering, and in 2000 a Ph. D. degree in Computation and Neural Systems, both from the California Institute of Technology, Pasadena. Luis enjoys painting and mountain biking, and is a Kung-Foos Master-in-training. Contact Luis
Ed Donohue Ed Donohue is Director of Operations and Manufacturing. Ed received his B.S. in Electrical Engineering in 1972 from California State University, Los Angeles and dedicated the first two-thirds of his career to electronic hardware design in the petrochemical, commercial & newspaper printing, highway traffic signaling, and custom automation controls industries, to name a few. For eleven of those years, he was owner of a consulting and light manufacturing business. His current focus is influenced by those first years of his career and the knowledge he gained for the importance of manufacturing and operations processes — their management, implementation and improvement. Nasim Mazaheri Nasim Mazaheri, CPA is Director of Accounting and Finance at Evolution Robotics Retail. Nasim oversees the Finance and Accounting function of the company. Prior to joining Evolution Robotics Retail, Nasim worked at the Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank in the product performance group, as well as an array of technology and Internet marketing based companies. She received a B.A. in Accountancy from George Washington University in Washington, DC in 1996, and has worked at Ernst & Young's Assurance and Advisory Group. Rich Rands Richard (Rich) Rands is Director of Sales and Program Manager. Rich has been involved with using technology to solve business problems in the grocery industry for over 40 years. Prior to his employment at Evolution Robotics Retail, he worked for UPONS, the pioneer in the field of delivering coupons through a frequent shopper card. He was also President of RSS, a company that supports grocers by developing code and replacing proprietary POS controllers with standard PCs. He began his work with grocers while at IBM in sales, marketing and project management. Attending the University of Utah, he graduated with a BSEE and MBA post-graduate work.
